A Man of His Word
A man of his word.
I don’t think anyone would object to being described as a ‘man of his word’ — it is a compliment, after all. Someone who does what he says, someone who follows through, and someone who lives up to his beliefs.
We have all learned the lesson of what it means to give someone ‘your word.’ But, it’s not very often that someone says, “You have my word” and they really mean it.
Believe it or not, there was a time when all a man had was his word. Giving our word, making oaths, or taking vows actually meant something for all of us, not just those called to the priesthood or religious life.
Nowadays, it seems like we live in a time of empty promises and fear of commitment.
But, here and now, let’s take a look inward. Do we make promises? To whom? Do we keep our promises?
Or, better yet, what promises have we made to God? Have we kept those?
If we’re feeling a little idle or stagnant in our faith, maybe it’s time to renew those promises.
Do you reject Satan?
And all his works?
And all his empty promises?
Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth?
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?
Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?
God, the all-powerful Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has given us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and forgiven all our sins. May he also keep us faithful to our Lord Jesus Christ for ever and ever.
