Bed on time
"50% of holiness is going to bed on time." - Fr. Augustine Wetta
I love this.
I am a morning person. Even when I'm tired and groggy, I know once I'm up, I'm up. I just need to get moving. There's no such thing as going back to sleep for me.
Unfortunately (or fortunately?), some of my kids have inherited the same trait. Which means that if I want to have my quiet morning time, I need to get up earlier and earlier.
The lesson learned here is that it's not your morning alarm that's so important—it's your evening one. The one that goes off to say, "Time for bed."
Recently, I set three alarms in the evening to act as indicators: hey, it's time to start winding down. Get ready for sleep.
Because tomorrow depends on it. And when tomorrow depends on it, well, all your tomorrows depend on it.
Think about it: if you're consistently exhausted, how well can you love your family? How patient can you be with difficult people? How present can you be in prayer? How generous can you be when someone needs help?
The spiritual life isn't just about what happens during prayer time or at Mass. It's about having the energy and clarity to live like a Christian all day long.
Going to bed on time isn't just about feeling better tomorrow. It's about being the person God created you to be tomorrow. And the day after that. And the day after that.
Which is a kinda big deal.
