Brownie Points
As men, we don’t really like getting help, or admitting that we need it.
To us, it’s like any skill, achievement, or accomplishment is somehow lessened if we had a teacher assist us in the process.
We can sometimes scrape by in certain aspects of life without help, but not when it comes to faith. When it comes to sanctity, there are no points for going it alone or being self-taught.
When eternal paradise is on the line, it’s actually eternally stupid to refuse help.
The good news is that we have a teacher willing to help. Our relationship with Christ is just that — a student-teacher relationship. We are disciples following the discipline of the Master. And, we have brothers in faith, priests, and scholars who can aid us in following this discipline.
But, this requires humility. Many of us are not used to being the student. We must admit that we don’t have all of the answers. But, if we can swallow our pride, we can become good students to then become great leaders for our families, community, and Church.
At the end of the day, there’s Heaven or Hell. You’re in or you’re out. There are no brownie points for refusing help.
