Cause and Effect
After Christ’s death, the Apostles were in hiding — and, rightfully so. It wasn’t paranoia that caused them to think they’d be next...their leader was just killed! It makes logical sense that the enemies of Christ would eventually come after them too.
We’ve seen this strategy before — cut off the head, and the body dies.
But, in the Apostles’ case, it doesn’t. In fact, it has the exact opposite effect. It’s a beautiful testament to the resurrection of Christ.
Before — Apostles were locked inside, afraid.
After — They go out and preach, converting three thousand on their first try.
What happened? Did they just need a few days to muster up the courage? To pick a new leader? To ‘convince’ themselves that Christ was raised from the dead?
What could have possibly happened that would result in this ‘headless’ body of eleven men successfully converting thousands, spreading the faith to the ends of the earth, and building a Church which has outlasted every empire?
It’s an unparalleled effect. And maybe, just maybe, that means the cause was even more unparalleled.
