Fairweather
Sometimes in the Gospel, we hear Jesus speak and we might think, “Hmm, I wonder what He meant by that.” Other times, His words are more clear and direct.
Christ issues several warnings that are pretty clear cut and very much apply to us men living in the twenty-first century.
One of these warnings appears in Matthew’s Gospel: “Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.” (10:32-33)
It’s difficult being a Catholic today. In some places, Christians face imprisonment, torture, and even death. While this isn’t as common in the U.S., we still face ridicule, mockery, contempt, and hatred for our beliefs. We feel tempted to deny our faith for the sake of our career, or our reputation, or just to save ourselves the embarrassment or emotional pain.
Christ isn’t looking for fair-weather fans. We need to understand that no matter how big or small, denying God is denying God.
And, while Christ’s words can strike a little fear in us, He also simplifies things for us. Put God before self.
