Frogs
Most of us have probably heard the expression “a frog in boiling water.” It’s a fable which tells us that if a frog is thrown into boiling water, it’ll immediately jump out. But, if the frog is thrown into lukewarm water that is slowly increased in temperature, the frog will unknowingly be boiled to death.
Whether or not this fable is grounded in reality (please don’t test it), there’s still a lesson for us.
As a culture, we could be described as frogs in boiling water. Over the past fifty years, the temperature has slowly been increasing — we’ve become accustomed to evil and sin. Things that were once unthinkable are now commonplace.
This happens when evil goes unnoticed and uncondemned. Little compromises are made, and the line in the sand is moved just a few inches, but over years and years, those inches add up.
In the here and now, we must call out sin for what it is — in our culture and in our own lives. We must judge our hearts now and repent, before we are judged on the last day.
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” - Edmund Burke
