Healing Vices
“O most holy heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore you, I love you, and with lively sorrow for my sins I offer you this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to your will. Grant, Good Jesus, that I may live in you and for you. Protect me in the midst of danger. Comfort me in my afflictions. Give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, your blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. Amen.”
This is the Sacred Heart prayer, which is often found on prayer cards portraying an image of Jesus revealing His sacred heart.
“Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to your will.” How powerful!
When you look around at our world, you see the exact opposite: pride, instant gratification, sexual promiscuity, and “you do you” culture.
In this one sentence, we have a prayer that addresses the crises of our times and calls on Christ to heal those sins in our own hearts. Simply going to church and being Catholic doesn’t make us immune to these vices.
Through the Sacred Heart, we pray for the grace to overcome the vices of our world, to be humble, patient, pure, and wholly obedient to God’s will.
