Hear and Do

We are called to not just be hearers of God’s word, but doers as well.

Chances are, you’ve already heard it all. Between going to Mass, reading Scripture, attending Catholic school, or going to religious education classes, we should have a pretty good idea of what we should do, what’s right versus what’s wrong, and how God is asking us to live. Yes, there is always a level of discernment for us, but as far as the broad strokes of God’s will and His Commandments go, we know what they are.

But, this is the critical point — knowing isn’t enough, simply hearing God’s word isn’t enough. We must take that knowledge, the teachings of Jesus Christ, and live it. There are actions that must follow. Christ Himself says: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21)

A true disciple is one who hears...and does.
