Little Things
A month ago, I received a book about raising children to be virtuous, holy, and—God willing—saints. What struck me most was that the very first topic wasn’t prayer or discipline, but order.
At first, that seemed a little counterintuitive. Shouldn’t we start with something more spiritual? But the more I reflected on it, the more it made sense. Order means everything is in its proper place—not just physically, but also in how we use our time, energy, and resources. When things are ordered, they function as they should.
In family life, especially with young children, physical order can feel like an impossible task. So, we started small: making the bed each morning. It’s such a simple habit, but I truly believe it’s laying the foundation for something greater. It gives our kids a sense of discipline, a small achievement at the start of the day, and a mindset that values order in the little things.
And really, isn’t holiness built on the little things? The small acts of faithfulness, the daily habits that shape who we become?
What little things can we begin with today? How can we bring just a bit more order into our lives?
