Model and Guide
In Mary, we find another human creature, just like us. She was not divine like her Son, but she was preserved from sin. She is a model for us, someone to be emulated. And, not only that, but she is our guide. She has ascended the mountain, she has followed Christ. Mary has shown us the way. And now from her place in Heaven, she can intercede for us as an advocate with the Son.
“O Blessed Virgin, the Angel declared that ‘you have found grace before God.’ You will always find grace, and I need only grace; I ask for nothing else.” —Saint Bernard
Let’s be honest here — we need all the help we can get in our spiritual lives. So many of the Saints knew this, and thus, they had a special place in their hearts for Mary.
Devotions like the Rosary or the Scapular are ways in which we can honor her, and ask for her help. Think of what we say in the Hail Mary — the words honor her and ask for her help...now and at the hour of our death.
At all times, but especially in the darkest moments, let us call on her. Let us ask for her intercession.
“If the winds of temptation arise, if you run into the reefs of trials, look to the star, call upon Mary. In danger, in sorrow, or perplexity, think of May, call upon Mary.” —Saint Bernard
And always, let’s turn to her as our model and guide on our journey to the Son.
