Overtime
There are times in life when we don’t hesitate to put in extra time. Most often, it’s with work. A project has a looming deadline, so we stay late. A client has a problem on Saturday, so we hop on a call.
It’s not just work, either. The basement floods, and we’re up until midnight moving boxes and mopping up water. A friend needs us, so we rearrange our schedule.
When something needs to get done, we get it done. No questions asked.
But here’s a thought: do we take the same approach with our faith?
What happens when we miss our usual prayer time? If I overslept and missed work, I’d probably stay late to make up for it. But if I miss prayer... do I make up for it? Or do I just shrug and chalk it up as lost time?
I’ll admit it—I fail at this. There are days when I treat prayer like an optional task on my to-do list.
When it comes to work, home projects, or even hobbies, we feel a sense of duty and responsibility. We don’t leave those things undone.
Why, then, do we sometimes approach prayer, Mass, or other spiritual obligations so casually?
Is it our duty to pray? Yes. Is it our duty to go to Mass? Absolutely.
The truth is, there’s no greater priority than your relationship with God. Everything else flows from it. Let’s not just give Him our leftovers. And when we need to, let’s in overtime.
