Progressive Overload
In weightlifting, there's a concept called Progressive Overload. No, it doesn't have anything to do with politics.
It's the idea that if you want to get stronger, then all you have to do is lift just a little more each day.
If you normally bench press 135 lbs, add 5 lbs this week. Another 5 next week. Or, keep the same weight and add just one more repetition. It's not rocket science. Over time, you'll get stronger.
There's a lesson here worth taking to our spiritual life.
If you want to pray a daily rosary, maybe start by praying a decade a day for a month. Then increase another decade. Then another.
If you want to make a daily holy hour and you're currently praying a daily 'zero', then start with 10 minutes. After a few weeks, go up to 15 or 20 minutes.
No one can go from couch potato to Arnold Schwarzenegger overnight. And similarly, we're not going to make massive leaps in our spiritual disciplines in a day.
Incremental change over time. How can we use that to our advantage?
