The Problem of Noise
Throughout our lives as Catholics, there should be a running theme: silence.
Our lives are filled with so much noise. Our eyes and ears are exposed to so much junk. Numbers have been thrown around saying that the average person is exposed to five thousand advertisements per day. Five thousand! That number is incomprehensible.
Because of this, we have a great challenge before us: to detach from it all, and embrace the silence.
Blaise Pascal once said, “Most of our problems come from not being able to sit quietly in a room with ourselves.”
There’s certainly truth to his words, and they’re still so relevant today.
We must re-learn what it’s like to sit silently. It is in silence that we can take a step back and examine our lives, or take some time to grapple with big questions.
And while it’s true that we should be able to sit quietly in a room with ourselves, it’s even more important that we should be able to sit quietly in the presence of the Lord.
Take the time to re-learn the power of silence.
