The Way of Humility
Going back to the beginning, we see that Mary plays a special role in God’s plan of salvation. After the fall in the Garden, God says to the serpent: "I will put enmity between thee and the woman…she shall crush thy head.” (Genesis 3:15)
Scholars typically agree that this passage in Genesis refers not to Eve, but to the ‘new’ Eve, Mary. We see it depicted in so many Marian statues — her foot on the serpent’s head. We also hear Our Lady’s own words and promises from her apparitions at Fatima: “In the end, My Immaculate Heart will triumph.” In this great battle against evil, there is hope.
But, it’s also important to remember by what power Mary will triumph. It’s not her own power, but through the power of her Son. Representing the true spirit of humility, Mary shows us the proper way of serving God, by submitting to His holy will and giving yourself completely to Him. “For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.” (Luke 1:48)
While we have not been preserved from sin like Mary, the way of Mary’s humility is the path that we are called to follow. And, the path of Mary leads to one place...her Son.
To Jesus, through Mary.
