This Moment Is a Gift
Lately, I’ve been reflecting a lot on the cliché that this current moment—this day, this hour, this minute, this task—is a gift. And it is passing. When it’s gone, there is no way of getting it back.
So often in our modern day, we find distractions for ourselves. Things to keep us busy or make us feel busy that aren’t serving any purpose. We set true leisure aside—rest that actually refreshes us—and instead just fill our time with meaningless stuff.
For me, it’s always in the afternoon when I’m a little more tired and not as motivated. I can dream up very creative ways of wasting time. Scrolling through my phone. Clicking through articles I don’t care about. Watching videos that add nothing.
And afterwards, the feeling is always the same—like getting punched in the gut.
That’s the tell. That hollow feeling that comes from knowing we just squandered something we can’t get back.
The warning for all of us is that we cannot get comfortable with that feeling. We can’t let it become normal. We have to recognize how precious time is and never be okay with wasting it.
Every moment is an opportunity—to pray, to love, to work, to rest well, to be present to what God has placed in front of us right now.
